Anova steam oven error codes
6 codes for Anova Precision Oven 1.0 and 2.0 (messages shown on the oven handle/screen and in the Anova Oven app), transcribed from the official documentation with page references.
| Code | What it means | Likely cause | What to do | Service? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fill Error / fill light | The oven does not detect enough water (Precision Oven 1.0); shown in the app and on the oven handle | Tank not seated properly; tank below the minimum line; outdated firmware | Reseat the tank with a little downward pressure; fill above the minimum line (at least half full); hold the fill light icon until it clears; check firmware in the Oven App (More > General > Firmware version). If it persists: with the oven not running press the fill icon, then run Sous Vide Mode Off, 212 F, 100% steam to dose the boiler and reset the sensors | Owner fix |
| Fill (tank is full) | Fill notification shown although the tank is full (Precision Oven 1.0) | Tank not seated; water-level sensors need resetting | Reseat the tank; fill at least half full; with the oven on but not running press the fill icon; run Sous Vide Mode OFF / 212F / 100% steam. If that does not help, email [email protected] | Call service |
| NEED SERVICE + error code | Internal error checking detected a heating element fault (Precision Oven 1.0, firmware 1.1.31 and later); the two messages cycle until the oven is unplugged | Heating element operation check failed | Unplug the oven; contact Anova support | Call service |
| 408 Needs Service (formerly shown as I 9) | Service-required error (Precision Oven 1.0, firmware 2.1.3 renamed the I 9 message to 408 Needs Service) | Not stated; the changelog also notes cooks cannot be started from the app when the handle shows an error due to a broken NTC sensor | Contact Anova support | Call service |
| Error 221 pop-up | Error pop-up on Precision Oven 2.0 that Anova removed in firmware 11_209_1.2.17_01.01.14 | Not stated in the changelog | Update the oven firmware; the pop-up no longer appears on current firmware | Owner fix |
| Anova Onboard App is not responding (error screen) | Oven 2.0 interface failed to load after the 28 July 2025 firmware update | Faulty firmware update (black screen issue) | Keep the oven awake and connected to WiFi through the 1-4 AM overnight update window so it receives the fixed firmware; if it does not update, contact Anova customer support with your account email | Call service |

Before you call Anova
- Refill and re-seat the water tank, and straighten any inlet or drain hose you can reach.
- Run the descale program if the oven has one, with the manufacturer's descaler, not vinegar.
- Switch the oven off at the wall for a minute and back on. One power-cycle is in nearly every manual; repeated resets are not.
- If the same code returns, note it with the serial number and book service. Every sensor, probe, fan or board code above is listed by Anova as a service call.
Maintenance that prevents the water codes
Regular descaling with the product your manual names prevents most of the scale-related faults above. Affiliate links, at no cost to you.
A general-purpose steam-oven descaler, for ovens whose manual allows a generic one (Anova says any descaling liquid works). Miele and Thermador name their own descalers; use those instead.
