The pattern across brands

Most owner-fixable codes are water problems: an empty or badly seated tank, a kinked inlet hose, a blocked drain, or scale. Miele's F20 is literally "descale me". Nearly every code that points at a sensor, a probe, a fan motor or a board is a service call on every brand we checked. So before you phone anyone: refill and re-seat the tank, check the hoses, run a descale, power-cycle once. If the code comes back, stop and book service, because the manuals are consistent that repeats mean a part.

Jump to a brand: Miele, Fotile, NuWave, Toshiba, Alto-Shaam, Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau, Wolf, Anova, Fisher & Paykel, Sharp, Tovala, Cuisinart.

DGC 7000-series combi-steam ovens (DGC 7440, 7640, 7840, 7780, 7785 and siblings)

Code What it means Likely cause What to do Service?
F10 Water intake problem from the tank. The suction hose in the water container is not inserted correctly or is not vertical. Correct the position of the suction hose, then restart. Owner fix
F11 Water is not draining. The drain hoses are blocked. Clear the drain hoses. If the message returns, contact Miele Service. Call service
F20 Descaling is required. Limescale build-up in the steam system. Descale the oven (see "Cleaning and care" in the manual). If the fault message appears again afterwards, contact Miele Customer Service. Owner fix
F44 Technical fault. Internal electronics fault. Switch the oven off and on again. If the same message appears again, contact Miele Service. Call service
F55 Safety shut-off after maximum run time. The oven ran a function for longer than its maximum permitted time and switched itself off. Switch the oven off and on again; it is immediately ready for use. Owner fix
F94 No water reaching the plumbed inlet (DGC 7785 and other plumbed models). Inlet hose trapped or kinked, water supply valve not opened, or a float switch in the water container is stuck. Free the hose and open the supply valve, then restart. If it returns after fixing the cause, contact Miele Service. Call service
F190 Water intake valve fault (plumbed models). Can occur if the control panel is opened or closed while water is being drawn in. Confirm with OK and continue. If the message appears again, contact Miele Service. Call service
F196 General fault, often the drain filter. The drain filter is not inserted correctly, or an internal fault. Turn the oven off, re-seat the drain filter, turn it back on. If it recurs, contact Miele Service. Call service
F1 Continuous audible signal after the oven is switched off (function knob at 0); residual water cannot be pumped out. The water container used to collect pumped-out residual water is not in the appliance. Push the water container fully into the appliance. Owner fix
F04 Power interruption during a cooking program. The power supply was interrupted during operation. Check the cooking progress, enter a new cooking duration if necessary, and press Start/Stop to continue. Owner fix
F05 Water nozzle needs descaling or the water intake valve is not fully open. The water intake valve is not fully open, or the water nozzle is scaled up or clogged. Open the water intake valve fully and restart. Otherwise let the oven cool, remove the side runners, pull out the nozzle, descale it with Miele descaler or a suitable descaler, rinse it, run Steam cooking at 212 F for 1 minute with the nozzle removed to flush the water-carrying parts, then refit the nozzle and runners. If the fault persists, contact Miele Service. Call service
F12 The current cooking program is interrupted; water is not getting into the steam oven. The water intake valve is not open; the filter in the water intake is blocked; or the water intake hose is faulty. Open the water intake valve and restart, or clean the intake filter. If the intake hose is faulty, turn the oven off, close the water supply valve and contact Miele Service (or a plumber). Call service
F13 The temperature in the oven is too high. The water intake valve is not fully open, or the water nozzle is scaled up or clogged. Open the water intake valve fully and restart, or descale the nozzle using the same procedure as for F05. If the fault persists, contact Miele Service. Call service
F14 Water inlet symbol: too little water is reaching the steam generator. Too little water is getting into the steam generator. Turn the steam oven off and back on. If the message appears again, switch the oven off and contact Miele Service. Call service
F27 / E04 Power interruption during operation (F27) or during the descaling program (E04, with 0:06 on the time display). The power supply was interrupted. F27: check cooking progress, re-enter the duration if needed and press Start/Stop. E04: let the 0:06 timer run down, then turn the oven off and back on. Owner fix
F38 Electronic fault. A technical fault in the electronics that the owner cannot remedy. Contact Miele Service. Call service
F54 Water is not getting into the steam oven. The water intake valve is not open. Check that the water intake valve for the oven is open; if no water is supplied, open the valve or contact a plumber. Owner fix
F74 Technical fault. A technical fault the owner cannot remedy. Book a repair appointment with Miele. Call service
F95 The level switch is blocked by limescale. Limescale deposits in the water container. Descale the steam oven as described in the operating instructions. If the fault persists, contact Miele Service. Call service
F235 Electronics fault. A technical fault in the electronics that the owner cannot remedy. Book a repair appointment with Miele. Call service
F267 Temperature limiter fault. A technical fault in the temperature limiter that the owner cannot remedy. Book a repair appointment with Miele. Call service

What the fixes above usually need

Most owner-fixable codes come down to scale. Use the descaler your manual names: Miele and Thermador specify their own. Affiliate links, at no cost to you.

Durgol Swiss Steamer descaler

A general-purpose steam-oven descaler, for ovens whose manual allows a generic one (Anova says any descaling liquid works). Miele and Thermador name their own descalers; use those instead.

Missing your brand? We only publish codes we can source to an official manual. The Manual Library has the full PDF for every oven we track, and a brand missing here either publishes no code table (Balmuda, Panasonic, Smeg, Robam, Dreo) or we could not obtain an official document.
